Review: Dovo shavette

For about 7 years I have been using a straight razor for shaving. The reasons I first decided to buy one are many. One of the reasons is that I really like quality, I liked the thought of being able to buy a razor once and then be able to use it for the rest of my life and then pass it on to the next generation. It never really panned out that way thou as I now have quite a lot of strops and straight razors.

One of the other reasons was that you will have to search for a long time to find something that is more masculine than to put a knife to your throat and start slicing. I also heard a lot from people who had gone to barbers and tried it that were extremely impressed with the smooth result.

So I ordered a straight razor, shaving soap, a badger shaving brush and a leather Strop to begin with. After about 50 shaves I started to get much better at it, as I improved the angle of the blade, the pressure and so on and it started to feel great.

But in my job I travel a lot and bringing all of this equipment to hotel rooms and airplanes is sort of a hassle so I needed to find an alternative to this that could be used whenever I needed a portable straight razor without the need for a strop.

This is when I discovered shavettes , they are straight razors with disposable single razor blades that require no stropping or sharpening. The one I chose is the same as the hairdressers at home uses, the Dovo Shavette, it differentiates itself a little from other ''normal straight razors'' in that it has a slightly more modern design, but in turn it takes up very little space in my toiletry bag and leaves room for a shaving brush and a good shave soap to go with it.

When you start to get the hang of the angles with it it feels very natural to shave with it, and it gives great results every time.

The blades are dirt-cheap and you can change the holder in the razor so that it can fit longer blades! The shorter blades are plenty long enough for most people, especially since you will most likely get addicted and end up with a full blood straight razor to have at home and use the shavette in between and when you travel.

All in all it gives a great shave, lasts longer than a normal plastic robot razor and is one of the most manly things you can own next to a true straight razor!
