Review: Dovo shavette

For about 7 years I have been using a straight razor for shaving. The reasons I first decided to buy one are many. One of the reasons is that I really like quality, I liked the thought of being able to buy a razor once and then be able to use it for the rest of my life and then pass it on to the next generation. It never really panned out that way thou as I now have quite a lot of strops and straight razors.

One of the other reasons was that you will have to search for a long time to find something that is more masculine than to put a knife to your throat and start slicing. I also heard a lot from people who had gone to barbers and tried it that were extremely impressed with the smooth result.

So I ordered a straight razor, shaving soap, a badger shaving brush and a leather Strop to begin with. After about 50 shaves I started to get much better at it, as I improved the angle of the blade, the pressure and so on and it started to feel great.

But in my job I travel a lot and bringing all of this equipment to hotel rooms and airplanes is sort of a hassle so I needed to find an alternative to this that could be used whenever I needed a portable straight razor without the need for a strop.

This is when I discovered shavettes , they are straight razors with disposable single razor blades that require no stropping or sharpening. The one I chose is the same as the hairdressers at home uses, the Dovo Shavette, it differentiates itself a little from other ''normal straight razors'' in that it has a slightly more modern design, but in turn it takes up very little space in my toiletry bag and leaves room for a shaving brush and a good shave soap to go with it.

When you start to get the hang of the angles with it it feels very natural to shave with it, and it gives great results every time.

The blades are dirt-cheap and you can change the holder in the razor so that it can fit longer blades! The shorter blades are plenty long enough for most people, especially since you will most likely get addicted and end up with a full blood straight razor to have at home and use the shavette in between and when you travel.

All in all it gives a great shave, lasts longer than a normal plastic robot razor and is one of the most manly things you can own next to a true straight razor!

Personal EDC for the modern man!

EDC is a concept that has been growing more and more popular around the world for quite a time now, the reason for this is that: 1. Men (me included) LOVE lists, there is no getting around it, they are simply just awesome! and 2. We always like to be prepared for everything and anything, an instinct that has gone with us from the dawn of day.

EDC is as most people know an acronym for Every Day Carry, and simply covers the equipment we normally carry with us every day, simple right? For most people this is the things we carry that we would feel naked without, like our phone and wallet for example.

So what else is there to carry for the modern man on the move to what ever he is going to? We already have our phone which normally have a wealth of apps to help us with just about anything we could think of, and we have our wallet so we are ensured that we can buy food and drinks, what else is there to carry then?

What I always have as long as it is legal where I am, is a knife! No matter how many apps you have on your smartphone it will never be able to open plastic packaging for you, it won't serve as an emergency screwdriver in the hour of need and it will not help you make hot dog sticks for your kids while out camping. I like to carry a Multitool ($46.43) for the most part as this gives me the widest span of available tool and functions. My choice of multitool is the Leatherman Wave ($99.99) which have helped me out more times than I can imagine. Other times and outfits make it necessary to have a slimmer and prettier pocket knife to keep looking good, You won't have the same range of tools, but you are still way more prepared for most eventualities than most other around you. This one ($34.90) or This one ($33.69).

Another great thing to always have on you is a pen and a notepad! But can't your phone do this? Of course it can, but there is something special writing the good old fashioned way that you can't argue, as well as is does not make you look rude when tapping away at your phone in front of others. (something a gentleman would never do) I really like the Rite In The Rain Kit ($29.46). This is a waterproof writing kit which comes along great here in the rainy western parts of Norway.

We still have the issue to be able to carry the stuff we would like to bring  along with us, There is more to come further down the list that would be nice to always have with you, and as the list grows longer there is a greater need for being able to carry the stuff along when the pockets starts bulging. I prefer a Messenger bag ($55.99) as this looks perfectly alright with most outfits and normally comes with several practical pockets and functions that help finding your stuff easier. This also gives you the opportunity to carry along your laptop and such for work or school.

One thing I tend to have with me the most often in my bag except for a few programming reference books and my Kindle is a rugged Waterbottle ($9.99) . In Norway the tap water is perfectly safe for drinking and having my own reusable bottle saves me a lot of money in the long run. Remembering to drink enough every day is quite a struggle at times but by always having a bottle with you, you will always be able to take small sips at all times during the day to stave of dehydration.

What I personally believe should be a part of any EDC is a small First Aid Kit ($8.53) , This gives you the means to be able to help yourself and others in the hour of need. A normal kit will give you the means of treating small cuts and scrapes and also contain CPR masks or similar to help you save lives! You can also add to this kit your headache medication of choice so you can keep that at bay when needed as well.

There are several more items that would be handy to bring along at all times and a will post articles on several of them in the future, the last thing I would like to empathize in this article is the need to carry a USB memory stick ($29.49) ! In this digital era it is almost a necessity to carry along a USB dongle with your personal information on it, preferably with a password protection. On it you can have your resume, health information, photos, presentations and other important documents on you at all times and can access them without the need for an internet connection.

I hope this has been a valuable article and that some of you will start to think more about what you carry every day so that you can be prepared for most eventualities during the day. The links and photos are clickable referral links which I do make a small percentage of!

Have a nice day!
